US military warns oil output may dip causing massive shortages by 2015

By | April 12, 2010

Total oil refineryThe US military has warned that surplus oil production capacity could disappear within two years and there could be serious shortages by 2015 with a significant economic and political impact.

The energy crisis outlined in a Joint Operating Environment report from the US Joint Forces Command, comes as the price of petrol in Britain reaches record levels and the cost of crude is predicted to soon top $100 a barrel.

“By 2012, surplus oil production capacity could entirely disappear, and as early as 2015, the shortfall in output could reach nearly 10 million barrels per day,” says the report, which has a foreword by a senior commander, General James N Mattis.

It adds: “While it is difficult to predict precisely what economic, political, and strategic effects such a shortfall might produce, it surely would reduce the prospects for growth in both the developing and developed worlds. Such an economic slowdown would exacerbate other unresolved tensions, push fragile and failing states further down the path toward collapse, and perhaps have serious economic impact on both China and India.”

The US military says its views cannot be taken as US government policy but admits they are meant to provide the Joint Forces with “an intellectual foundation upon which we will construct the concept to guide out future force developments.”

The warning is the latest in a series from around the world that has turned peak oil – the moment when demand exceeds supply – from a distant threat to a more immediate risk. …

Running out means running out. Doesn’t matter where else we drill, we are running out.

We will do a bit of everything: More drilling, Nuclear, Wind, Solar, Geothermal, Hydroelectric, …. and it still won’t be enough. Fossil fuel energy has resulted in a significantly larger human population than can survive without it. Since we as a species refuse to share the available food and wealth, we already have mass starvation.

“On the average, 1 person dies every second as a result, either directly or indirectly, of hunger – 4000 every hour – 100 000 each day – 36 million each year “)

In 2008 there was a story that said “36 million Americans are now facing difficulty finding enough food to eat“.
In 2009 the UN said “One billion worldwide face starvation“.

We learned a lot during the Information Age. We don’t have to return to the Stone Age if we cooperate. History says we might.

The super powers can either battle it out (World War III) or they can get together and utilize their combined resources to shape a new future.

I think War is the more likely scenario because people are basically xenophobic, but I’d love to be wrong. It may be that there will be an “End of Oil War” and then those who remain we will re-shape the world into some … new … order.

Or you can believe that Peak Oil is just a hoax. You can believe that our military is falling for a hoax perpetuated by the oil companies but I find that unlikely.
