Pakistani Taliban insurgents freed almost 400 prisoners, including 20 particularly dangerous militants, from a high-security jail early on Sunday in an audacious raid with guns, grenades and rockets.

Officials at the jail in the northwestern Pakistani city of Bannu said that between 100 and 150 militants attacked shortly after 1am local time, firing assault rifles, machineguns and rocket-propelled grenades for two hours.

The hail of fire gave cover to four 12-man raiding teams, who blasted entry points in gates and walls and stormed in, unopposed by guards pinned down by fire.
